Qawwali

Qawwali is a popular form of Sufi devotional music in South Asia. It has been prevalent in the society for the past 700 years. Usually, it is performed at Sufi shrines or gargahs. The song will be mostly in Urdu and Punjabi. A group of nine (or eight) Qawwali musicians will sing the song. There will be a lead singer who will lead the group. It is notable that, women are excluded from the group of singers.

The length of the song will be 15 to 30 minutes. Sometimes, it may run over 115 minutes. The song usually begins gently and changes to a high energy level. There are different steps to build up the song. The song starts from playing any instrumental and then will be proceeded with other parts. Each has it's meaning and the sequence is followed in all the songs. Another kind of qawwali is filmy qawwali, which is prevalent nowadays. Special qawwali songs played in films are called filmy quawwali.
