Dandiya

Dandiya is a traditional folk dance performed portraying the scenes of lila of Krishna and Radha and of Holi. In western India, it is performed in the Navarathri evenings along with garba dance. It is prevalent more in Gujarat and Mumbai. Dandiya had originated from the devotional garba dances, which is performed to honor Goddess Durga. But, it is very common nowadays and performed during special occasions such as weddings and other social events.

The performers will wear traditional colorful dresses. Women will choose embroidered choli, ghagra and bandahni dupattas and the men performers will wear special turbans and kedias. The performers will move their feet and whirl around rhythmically according to the music. Drum, dholak, tabla etc are used for the music.
